The NOVA Open - 8/14/10

Edit: Website added - http://novaopen.com

Good Afternoon folks,

I just wanted to give an early heads up regarding the NOVA Open, which is the (currently) only VA-based Vegas qualifying Indy GT. It is currently listed on the Games Workshop's website NA Tournament Circuit listing as August 7 in Springfield, VA. That should update in the next day or two to the following.

It'll be a 4-round 40k and Fantasy tournament, 64 slots per system, at the Dulles Expo Center on Saturday, August 14, 2010 (week before Games Day). We'll have the full Conference Center (~10,000 net square feet, 7,000 of which will be set aside for actual tables/gaming) set aside.

I can tentatively reserve spots via mvbrandt@gmail.com at present, but we'll have full information for you and the website operational once we polish off some finishing touches in the next week or so.

Early info of value is that it will be a pretty well-rounded event in the awards and competition department, with equal but largely separate prize value and emphasis placed on Generalship, Painting, Sportsmanship, etc. (separate meaning that they will not directly impact each other), with an Overall in each system that does combine all facets of the hobby. We're up to an anticipated $4k+ in prizes, and that should grow with continued development of sponsorship/etc.

Registration rate will likely be $50.

This is an independent event, not run by any "group" or "club," and we're also looking for volunteers in terms of staff / development input, in case anyone would like to participate in such an event but doesn't enjoy playing in a tournament setting.

In the interim while we finish polishing off the website, blog chat re: various tournament-related subjects can be found and input given at http://whiskey40k.blogspot.com

Anyway, just the early heads up - I'd like locals to have the first shot at spots.

Bump!

Information update ...
Combined best performance for Renaissance Man for each system will be a superior prize to the above, as will the competitive Tournament Champion for each event.

4 Major “Soft” Awards (Sportsmanship, Players’ Choice, Painting, Conversion by system)

4 Major “Competitive” Awards (Each 4-0 Finisher by system)

2 Top Awards (Renaissance Man – Combined scores; Tournament Champion – Competitive)

Sunday “Final Four” 2-Round Invitational for the 4-0 Finishers in each system

Top-in-Bracket Awards for 2-2, 3-1 brackets; Door Prizes and Random Draw Prizes throughout the day

Spots continue to sell at a faster-than-anticipated rate for so many months out.
Sponsorships are rising, resulting in a higher than advertised prize pool (and more "swag" for all).

Just wanted to put in my two cents on the subject.

There are going to lots of prizes to win at this tournament. We've got over $2K worth of stuff from GW, tons of gift certificates and bitz bags from The War Store, and tons of stuff from Battle Foam and Kraftmark Polymer. And this is only the half of it that's been given to us by sponsors -- we're planning on having many more things to give away.

Update ...

The Open's 40k slots are nearly sold out ... we have about 4 left.

45% of the 40k attendance is coming from outside of the DC Metro region, including the following states ...

Ontario, Canada
California
Utah
North Carolina
South Carolina
Florida
Pennsylvania
New York
New Jersey
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
Wisconsin
Virginia
Maryland
DC
Ohio
With several well-known internet personas / tourney top dogs in attendance, such as Stelek from Yes the Truth Hurts, DashofPepper and Hulksmash from Dakka, etc. etc.

Fantasy has numerous slots left, and should be an easier crowd to crack, being the first GT to use 8th edition, with loosened wysiwyg/fully painted rules to accommodate the time given to adjust.

Either way, any Big Gunz looking to sign up should do so soon!

Sold out 40k, opened up 16 new slots, sold them out so we're at 80 attendees for 40k.

Taking wait lists to enable us to go to our cut off max of 96.
