Character Challenges

The rule reads "The player may choose any one character from those in base contact with the enemy to issue a challenge with."

Do the characters have to be base to base with eachother in order to declare/fight the challenge? Or does this mean only that their units need to be in base to base.

The character him/herself must be in base contact with the enemy to issue a challenge. So if the characters unit is charged in the flank, and they are not in contact with the enemy they may not issue a challenge.

Correct, as a corrolary the <i>challenged</i> character must also be in base to base contact as well.

I guess a more simple way to put it is the character has to be in the fighting/engaged rank.

I understand they must be in the fighting rank. But, do each character have to touch each other to fight? Is it ok for them to just be in that front rank?

If characters ranked up like that could they challenge each other? They are both touching the enemy but do they have to touch each other?

The 2 models do not have to be touching in order to issue a challenge. Once the challenge has been issued and accepted, then the model that accepted the challenge must move in the ranks so that he/she is opposite the issuer.

Those characters could challenge each other. However, in THIS scenario, the below two charcters could not:

A****
*******B

Since Character A is engaged, he may issues challenges, but character B may not accept them, since he is not engaged in it the unit. Since he's not in btb and can't fight anyways, he cannot accept a challenge. Only a model in hth combat may issue and accept challenges. In this case, perhaps there is a champion involved that could accept A's challenge, but B could not.
